Abstract This article is based on the ability of photography to elicit verbal productions. Photography is considered here as a trigger for oral interactions that facilitate communication. Although its didactic use in teaching French as a Foreign Language (FLE) has been practiced for a long time, it seems to have been somewhat neglected in Anglophone African countries, particularly in Nigeria. The issue raised concerns the difficulty experienced by some Anglophone students, including French language graduates, in expressing themselves fluently and spontaneously in French. This situation is what motivates the present study. It proposes various ways to use photography as a language tool in FLE classrooms. The article demonstrates that the use of photography or images in FLE classes enhances learners’ fluency in French. Moreover, it shows that this tool can be used at all levels, from beginner to advanced, in preparation for DELF and DALF exams, particularly in oral and written production. The document also proves to be useful for teaching literature. In conclusion, photography in FLE classrooms should be encouraged to achieve communicative objectives, as it is an excellent trigger for speech.

Abstract Language is a universal possession of human beings and it is a major distinguishing factor between man and lower animals. Language is made up of letters and words while literature is a structure of words relating to man and his society. Culture, on its part, is comprised of the way of life of a people. This includes their language, dressing, greetings, foods, beliefs and their identity. Nationhood is the quality of being a nation. The first three give a specific or unique identity to a people. In fact, it is evident that the right or wrong use of language can make or mar a nation. Furthermore, since literature mirrors the society, the positive or negative reflection of the way of life of members of the society can equally make or mar the nation. That is to say that for any nation to develop educationally, politically, economically, technologically, that nation has to pay adequale attention to its language, literature and culture. The problem here is that Nigeria as a nation is fast losing these three aspects. This chapter discusses the importance of language, literature and culture as integral parts of nationhood. It adopts the sociological approach, using library information, concluding that since there is a very strong relationship between the three, they cannot be ignored in national identity and advancement, and so it recommends, among others, the promotion of all Nigerian languages.

Abstract Language, the universal and easily understood means of expression is the nerve centre of existence. While it may be an over statement to say that there would be no human social interaction without language, such an interaction would he extremely difficult and precious without it. Language is also a carrier of culture and ideology and a means of self-definition and image formation. In this sense, language becomes the main instrument through which we apprehend and express reality. In this context, language becomes an instrument of power and a moving force behind any association. This paper therefore centres on how language can foster sub-regional integration. The findings reveal that language plays a major role in fostering international relationships. The paper therefore, concludes that without language sub-regional integration would be a mirage.

Abstract This paper discusses the power of memory, intertextuality and onomastics in Alain Mabanckou's novels. We are faced with a situation where several references are made to previous texts, films and songs, all rewritten in an entirely new and creative manner. The novels are dotted with various indigenous names already existing or created by the author. The reader is mostly surprised by the dominant presence of nicknames in place of proper names of characters. Adopting the socio-analytical method, the paper reveals the author's writing techniques and brings to the fore how he uses them to impact the readers through his novels. The study finds out that Mabanckou, not only revisits African and world literatures, but also reverts to his own previous works, thereby soliciting the reader's intertextual memory. Again, the author's memory, his narrators as well as his characters constitute the body of the stories. The paper concludes that the use of local names in these novels written in a foreign language (French) gives a local and cultural colouration to the author's works of fiction. Furthermore, the abundant use of intertextuality shows that the author has read extensively and also tries to combat some preconceived ideas about arts and life in general. This makes his texts a postmodern writing and also guarantees his reflexive autonomy as a writer.

Abstract This paper attempts to examine the roles language and literature could play in tackling security challenges in Nigeria. The current dreadful situation in the country with so much banditry, kidnapping, gruesome killing and the like calls for urgent attention. Unfortunately, these security challenges have caused the untimely death of many innocent people and have equally led to the destruction of properties worth trillions of naira, thus wreaking havoc to the individual and national economies. Using library information, the paper adopts the sociological approach to discuss the causes of conflicts and insecurity as well as the ways in which language and literature can serve as panacea to the security challenges in the nation. It was found that both individuals and the government have their own roles to play in proffering solutions to the problems. It was further discovered that through literature and the positive use of language, insecurity could be checked, averted and conflicts resolved. Thus, the study concludes that both language and literature influence the society and they are in turn influenced by the latter. As such, both of them could help to restore peace and security, thereby building the nation. Based on this premise, some recommendations were made.

Abstract Language is an important part of nationality given that it is one of the main components of national identity. Being multi-ethnic and multilingual, Nigeria needs to be effective in her use of language to help her remain united and develop as a nation. This paper looks at the role that language plays in socio-cultural life, education, and politics of Nigeria. It employs library information with focus on the use of language as a tool for national cohesion and development in Nigeria. The article posits that language can be more instrumental to Nigeria’s development economically, politically, socially and culturally, with the people remaining united in diversity. It shows that governance, socio-cultural interactions, and education cannot be successfully achieved in a given nation outside language. It is thus a necessary agent for peace, harmony, unity and progress in every nation. The paper recommends English as a lingua franca that should be taught to every Nigerian for better integration within the system. It concludes that language is a major tool if cohesion and national development are to be achieved in the nation.

Abstract This study is limited to discussing feminism as shown in the novels of Sony Labou Tansi and Alain Mabanckou, two Congolese authors. Sony Labou Tansi paints a picture of the woman endowed with infernal beauty and, armed with this quality, she poses a deadly trap to the masculine protagonists. In Alain Mabanckou’s work of fiction, the woman is seen to be vile and even shameless. Her immodesty also ruins the masculine characters. By the socio-analytical approach, the article exposes the various aspects of the woman’s role in the corpus. The study finds out that the woman in these novels is shown to be courageous, intelligent, but seductive and mysterious. Thus, she is militant, fighting with her body and with boldness against the man as well as against the authority he represents. The woman’s courage in Sony Labou Tansi’s novel is shrouded in mystery which surrounds the feminine character. In Alain Mabanckou’s work, the deplorable activities of this character reduce the man to human wreck. The study concludes that the portrait of the feminine character signifies social revolt against the ruling power and also a denunciation of the subjugation of the woman by the man in Africa and elsewhere.

Abstract Many works in Francophone African literature depict the rich traditions and cultural heritage of the African continent. However, the literary works of the postcolonial era abound with the presentation of African societies filled with moral decadence. For the elders in Colorant Félix, a novel by the Beninese writer, Destin Akpo, the modern man leads a social life full of immoral and condemnable practices. By the sociocritical method, the study analyses the unhealthy behavior and attitudes of the modern man in Africa and elsewhere. The paper sources library information on the main text and information on related texts. The objective of the study is to analyse the reflections led by the village elders on the degradation of morals in the modern world. The study reveals that the degradation of morals is partly due to the contact of the African with the Western world and partly due to the immoderate quest for money and pleasure in modern times. The study also finds out that one of the moral vices is the subversive and licentious sexuality practiced mostly in cities. This is seen as one of the causes of the calamities on earth, including the corona virus disease. The article concludes that in Africa, the rural dwellers are more discreet than the city dwellers and the elders more modest than the young ones. Finally, the role of improving the moral standards of the society is assigned to the virtuous woman. It is the duty of such a woman to encourage other people to be of more decent behaviour. It is commendable that Destin Akpo maintains a good sense of decorum in language in the presentation of moral decadence.

Abstract This work deals with the domestication of meaning. First, the meaning of 'meaning’ is explained and the seven types of meaning are critically examined. These are; conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social or stylistic meaning, effective meaning, reflected meaning, collocative meaning and thematic meaning. Meaning is domesticated through these means. After careful examination of these types of meaning, it is observed that meaning is elusive in nature. The research methods include the library and research questions. The library is where books and other information are kept. Research questions are further used as a guide to the work.

Abstract The teacher's role in the study of any language is very vital. Taking the example of Nigeria, this paper focuses on the role of the teacher in training future French language teachers using Information and Communication Technology. French being a foreign language im Nigeria, its Audies are dependent on adequate training by competent trainers who, in this regard, refer to the College of Education teachers whose duty is to train teachers for Primary and Secondary schools where French is taught to beginners. To do this successfully, the teacher must possess the basic technical know-how to enable him cope with the challenges of teaching beginners. The paper therefore discusses the role of the trainer using ICT in preparing the French teacher for the continuity of French studies in Nigeria. Based on library information, the study examines various aspects like classroom environment, program content and the methodology. The study finds out that when the trainer creates an enabling environment, teaches the required competences with the appropriate teaching methods, the College of Education French students will be thoroughly furbished to cope with the task of laying a good foundation. While pointing out some challenges, we recommend that College students should be assisted in different ways to improve the study of the language. We conclude that when the trainer does his job well, the trained teacher comes out better equipped for teaching.

Abstract Nigerian health sector faces many challenges including medical tourism, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to quality healthcare services, insufficient funding, a brain drain among clinicians, and many others. The health crisis in Nigeria has led to widespread poverty and exacerbated health disparities. Different approaches have been used by the Nigerian government to address the health crisis but have failed. This study suggests the implementation of the Egyptian philosophy of Maat to mitigate the effects of the health crisis in Nigeria. The Maat ethics is the application of the principle of balance, harmony, and order and had served as the moral foundation of ancient Egyptian society. Using the philosophy method of analysis, this study maintains that the integration of Maat Ethics into public health initiatives would enhance resilience and response mechanisms to health crises, promote community engagement, ensure equitable access to healthcare, and foster solidarity among diverse populations in the Nigerian health sector. This study concludes that by synthesizing ancient wisdom with modern public health strategies, this research aims to contribute to the development of culturally responsive and sustainable interventions for mitigating health crises in Nigeria and beyond. Additionally, incorporating traditional practices and cultural beliefs into modern healthcare approaches can help bridge gaps in access and improve health outcomes for all Nigerians.
